With good content, and loads of them too, you get ranked higher and that means more traffic, the key is this...

automate your contents as much as possible, go for rss feed, for certain sections of the site, you gotta update it yourself and make it look good, blog is an excellent example to do this,

so, how the money rolls in, implement text based ads around your site, position them at good looking spots, tweak the colour, fonts and all to match your site design so they don't look like ads!

then, in your blogs, try business blogging instead of telling what you did today, or yesterday or what not, go for reviews perhaps, talk about a certain product or service related to your website, review as much as possible and give your ratings or personal recommendations,

how to make money from that you say? sign up as affiliates to the products you recommend of coz! but don't simply write good reviews just for the money, you gotta be honest n truthful, else, your traffic will abandon you knowing that whatever you say is just to trick them into buying so you could earn from it

so, how's this business model for a start?

you basically can get good contents fed to your site for free, and you have lots of ads for your customers to get more info, then, you generate traffic and higher ranking through your blogs-which in turn, gives you affiliate commissions as well,

with minimal work, other contents are more or less automated, you just need to work on your blog, how great is that, while I don't guarantee your success to earn lots of money, I'm earning much better than my previous job, and I don't need to work on it for 8 hours a day, talk about an hour or two? or more if I want to, less if i'm lazy

my review, content sites are excellent model for beginners, plus, u actually generate a database too if you start a subscription, so you could further sell them things they're interested to look at, in the future

I ll echo almost all you say, using your own content to earn revenue is a great way and it gives you a lot of control over the look and direction of the site and also the message you want to portray. Its a form of product placement but done in a professional way it can seem so subtle its almost invisible to the average user.
