I want to use a third party to redesign a site based on a template of a well known travel portal. Are there any copyright issues with this even tho the actual content within will be original. Is it possible to copyright just a web idea/template? Regards

Hmm thats an interesting question. I would assume if you used the layout as merely a guide and changed enough of the colours and made sure you had original text and images it would be okay. This is such a foggy issue as each country has their own copyright laws. In Australia there's automatic copyright (which I dont think is very protective) but since the net is public domain I dont know how it works.
Ofcourse obciously if the site you plan to use as template has a copyright logo in it, you know its better to look elsewhere

the bigger the site, the riskier it is to "copy"
coz they have the financal backups to go thu the lawsuit and bring you down

One can copyright anything until one has created it . The idea , any illustration and especially pictures and sounds and even templates . Only one thing must be there that you must have created it on your own . You've probably heard that registering your copyright costs you $30. Yes, that's true, there is a $30 dollar fee if you choose to formally register your song, short story, photograph, painting, or whatever. You fill out Form TX for the written word, or form VA for graphic creations, such as photographs. Send in two copies of the 'work', plus your $30 dollars, to the Register of Copyright, Library of Congress, and your work will be entered into the archives and you will be in a better position to collect compensation in case of copyright infringement.
