Default Your opinion on OSCommerce

I have used Oscommerce for a couple of my own shops and for all my customers. I think that it is a wonderfull e-commerce solution, with great freedom an almost all of my customers agree.

What is your opinion on Oscommerce?

It is without doubt the best open source ecommerce solution available today. What I like about it is the plethora of really cool features (like customer product reviews, top sellers list etc) and the ease it affords the shop administrator to integrate order and inventory tracking.

The best bit about oscommerce is the thriving online development community. Have a look at their support forums and see how high the participation level is from both developers and shop administrators. All your questions are unswered in a timely manner and you can also get a lot of functionality from user contributions.

Yes the community is really awesome, and brings alot of value to the software/script.

There are alot of Opensource projects out there which lack this kind of developer community and because of that doesnt move forward, which is a real minus for users.

I used oscommerce a couple of years ago and found it a hassle. Admittedly it was around the same time that I first ventured into implementing a shopping cart into my websites, so my experience was tainted with many trials and errors. Considering the good feedback in this post about it, I may give it another try the next time I need a shopping cart

OsCommerce is an online shop e-commerce solution that offers a wide range of out-of-the-box features allowing online stores to be setup fairly quickly easily. It is available free as an Open Source based solution released under the GNU General Public License.

osCommerce utilizes Open Source solutions to provide free and open e-commerce platform, which includes:

- Powerful PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) web scripting language

- Stable Apache (Welcome! - The Apache HTTP Server Project) web server

- Fast MySQL (MySQL AB :: The world's most popular open source database) database server.

With no special requirements, osCommerce can run on any PHP 4.1+ enabled web server running on Linux, Solaris, BSD, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows environments.

Today, osCommerce has been taken to the next level, moving towards an e-commerce framework solution that not only remains easy to setup and maintain, but also making it easier for store administrators to present their stores to their customers with their own unique requirements.

Open Source software provides an opportunity for people to work on software with others that share the same interest, exchanging ideas, knowledge, and work with one another, to expand and improve the solution. Open source software is defined by its attached license guaranteeing anybody rights to freely use, modify, and redistribute the software.

Open source , i think it is always welcome , I have been working on open source platforms for years and just like open source source languages have just done so well , look at c++ ot html , how can one expect oscommerce not to do so well .Rather than attempt to be all things to all people, it provides a basic set of functionality that meets the common needs of all online businesses.
