Anytime you do a search on a term you will be given natural or "organic" results and PPC results. Most of the SEs run PPC results on the top and down the right side of the results.

To get into PPC just sign up for Adwords, Overture, ... and bid on the words you want traffic from. The higher the demand for a keyword ad, the more that ad will cost per click. If you want #1 in PPC just bid the most for that word.

Organic results are determined by the SEs and them alone. Each SE has its own algorithm to determine organic results.

careful on your biddings, paying the highest to get no 1 position in ppc can often lead to a really huge bill!

make sure you set your limits right to avoid many zeros charged to your account

For anyone natural search will always win because with PPC I think it is like you will always pay for the inclusion and being seen , it cannot be carried off all the time . Also with keyword bidding getting higher on rates pay per click on it is some times waste seeing the click fraud on such a large level making it precious dollars down the drain .But again the beauty of PPC is that it's very quick. You can have it up in running in minutes and a website that was launched yesterday can have 200 daily users the next day. (With natural placement, it can take 2-12 months to see results). Also, PPC is very controllable.
