Default Ebay experiences

I keep hearing stories and reading case studies how people make enough money on eBay for it to be a full-time venture. From my experience (admittedly brief) on EBAY I have never had that much success. Whilst just browsing through its listings I find that many people only bid very tiny amounts which surely wouldn’t leave much for profits. What products are generally likely to generate a higher interest? I would love to hear about positive and negative experiences with ebay.

You have to know what to buy.
For example I'm a guitarist , I always browse eBay for used guitars - You can find old guitars that not cost much (200-300 $) and after a restoration ( cost of restoration can be from 50 to 300 $ or more ...) you can sell them for 800 $ or more .It really depends of your eye !!!

One time I bought a 28 years old guitar for 420$ , spent 270$ on restoration and sold it for 960$!
It took me a lot of time and I didn't want to quit my day job so I'm not doing it anymore. Also , it was hard for me to give up the guitar.

That's one way ...

that's a really risky thing to do, forking out so much

it's like gambling it man, but i guess you must've known about guitars so much, you're dem confident about it else it wouldn't hav happened that way right?

There are several success stories about selling on ebay. I know of someone who sold used dennim trousers for good prices. He also did sell old comic books. It's worth trying!

The way I see it, you always here success stories about everything. But your not going to hear as many unsuccessful stories. There are probably just as many unsuccessful people, or maybe even more, as there are successful people. One of my good buddies goes to an electronic store called FRYS every weekend. They give really good discount on the stuff. So he buys alot of computer stuff every weekend. Eventually after making so many visits he became good friends with the customers. So he gets the sale+ a discount from the manager, then he sells it on ebay. He sets the price low, but charges alot for shipping. He gets good money.

I joined ebay back then and sold t-shirts and sometimes pens for collectors item. The only reason i stopped because i can't handle the shipping process internationally. At first it was ok, but after september 11, more countries are getting paranoid and the procedures to ship items to their country is such a hassle. I actually make some profits while it last. But i do admit, i did have to face with people that tried to scam me and all.

Ebay stores owners earn decent income, i believe. And yes, actually that is most ebay seller's tactic, which is to charge a bit high on the shipping cost.

Although most people know that tactic. It still esems to work. Because if you put the option for sorting on ebay to lowest price first, your item will come up. So with the low price people will want to bid on the item. As long as the shipping is not outrageously high it will usually work. But starting the bidding at $0.99 and making shipping a little bit high is a wonderful tactic.

The art it to make the shipping fee a bit higher, still when you combine the shipping fee and the item's price, the total is still cheaper than the market price out there. Thats the reason even though people realize these ebay's sellers' tactic, they don't really mind. Because despite of everything, it's still a bargain.

Yeah, now that I come to think of it, you are right. I've bought items off ebay before and payed like $15 bucks for shipping, but the price was like $1 or so, and I didn't really care. Recently, I bought a wireless mouse and keyboard for $13. The shipping was like $12, and the item was $1. I knew they charged me more for shipping but if I was to buy it in the stores I would have to pay at least 25 or so. Ebay usually has good bargains, but sometimes the bidding gets so intense, its more than the store price.

Even I have read a numerous sucess and failure stories on regarding selling on ebay . There is story ( i just forgot the link ) about an old woman making thousand dollars out of selling tickets to a concert . I think that is very shocking when you know that you can even get tickets to the show by yourself , i am jsut wondering that people do buy such stuff . and there are some gutsy sellers too .
