Default Free directory vs paid directory

Free directories consume a lot of time and effort but are they worth it as compared to paid directories where the response time is considerably fast??

Although I use free directories , I do use paid directories as well if they have proven high traffic and if the site i am designing for is well targeted in their directory

If it's free, it's gonna cost you time and effort, if it's paid, it's gonna cost you money. Simple as that. But the more important factors would be, which one is more beneficial to you, which one can bring more traffic to you.

Honestly speaking, if the free ones are really good, I don't think I'd mind spending time on it, coz, we only need to do it once right?

I think the major differnce between 'free' listings and 'paid' ones are that if they are free chances (correct me if i am wrong) they would have more listings, and not necessarily quality ones.

A website owner I assume would not pay to have their website listed if it wasnt up to scratch as it would just be a waste of money. By that logic paid listings would result in quality listings and consumers are generally aware of this.

If that's the case, why would anyone wanna associate themselves with the other "low-quality" sites listed on free listing directories?

It's not gonna look good being side-by-side with websites that are not of quality ones wouldn't it, and it takes up so much effort.

So you're saying website owners, once their sites are complete and ready to go, paid listing would be ideal for them? Is that what you mean?

on average, to get listed in various good directories by paid inclusions, would you happen to have an estimate like how much should be spent on these directories?

You have experience with these? Any good ROI from your efforts?

it really in my opinion should all depend on the site. Dont just choose any directory research its traffic turn over, how popular it is etc...

My justifcation behind this for my sites is that i research the site stats on where the visitors are coming from and the free diretories dont bring in as much, with the exception of dmoz, which seems to bring in a steady flow. Paid listings have a quicker approval rate which is a bonus

here is a list or reviews of free and paid directories

Red face paid-free directories

While choosing directories, we should always check traffic & PR of the directory. It may be free or paid directory. IF you are paying money & getting listed in a directory which has very less traffic as well as poor traffic, then it's worth is zero. Where as if you are listed in a free directory whose PR & traffic is high, then it will definitely boost traffic & rank of your site.
