Dmoz - does self-regulating work?

Should directories like dmoz be monitored??? DMOz has something like 74,035 editors. In their social contract they state that they encourage self-regulation governed by community-driven standards. Do you think that by allowing basically anything to be added that is lessens the quality of DMOZ or does it become like a gigantic yellow pages for the internet where everything goes?
