Telemarketing from the consumer point of view is an annoyance, but, you can just hang up the phone. However, you don't know the real take. Credit Card Companies and Cell Phone Companies - yes even the largest of them - sell their client lists to telemarketing companies. That is one reason why they pitch credit cards at colleges, because this consumer base is new, usually has a lot of cash, and has a brand new cell phone to take the call. The Cell phone company doesn't care if you actually buy anything, every second you are on the line is money in their pockets.

You can protect yourself from the Bank Credit Cards by asking, in writing, that your information remain confidential, but there is no way to protect yourself from the cell phone companies.

HOWEVER - There is one phrase and one phrase only that will stop them. "Take Me Off Your Call List." You can say "Don't Call Again" and they will call again. You can yell, scream, swear, and they will just call again. You must say "Take Me Off Your Call List."

AND - don't bother calling their service number, it is just a link to a telemarketer in another office who will make you feel better, but won't solve your problem.

Many people do not know that if a call is inbound, meaning it comes into your house, and you did not dial the phone, that you can LEGALLY, record the conversation. If you state comments like "I asked you to remove me from your list." or bait them into breaking the law, then the company can be charged, but only if it is in the same country that you are - Canada or the USA.

There are some good ways to do telemarketing too .Before you start calling a large number of potential customers, test your telemarketers, the scripts and the telemarketing lists you are using, first. Listen to your staff; they’ll tell you pretty quickly if something isn’t quite right. Then, tweak whatever needs it, and try again.
