Default Is it 'Goodbye' to stalwart friend floppy?

The time has come to bid farewell to one of the PC's more stalwart friends - the floppy disk.

Computing superstore PC World said it will no longer sell the storage devices, affectionately known as floppies, once existing stock runs out.

New storage systems, coupled with a need to store more than the 1.44 megabytes of data held by a standard floppy, have led to its demise.

Probably its becase the floppy disk looks increasingly quaint and simply isn't able to compete

The first ever floppy disk was introduced in 1971 by IBM and heralded as a revolutionary device.

So this is it... its goodbye to our friend floppy.

I can't even remember when the last time I used a floppy disk was. Because you can only store 1.44 MB it's not really that popular anymore. A CD is a better place to store data, because you can get around 700MB. A DVD is even better if you need large files, because that can hold up to 4 GB. But, a popular alternative these days is the Flash Drive. They have many different sizes, and they are much smaller than a floppy. You can erase the files any time you want, and it is renewable.

Floppy disk has been very useful in the computer industry for years especially during the time when computer technology was at its first step to evolution and innovation. I still remember my high school days when I used a floppy disk as my storage device for electronic files in word processing. It usually came at two different sizes which were the 5.25” and 3.5”. Keeping your files in floppy disk is not that secured as its storage function is very prone to viruses especially if you’re using DOS-Based programs in the early years. To be able to secure your files in the floppy disk you need to write-protect the disk, which is a hassle indeed every time you save a file in it. I guess, floppy disk days are already gone and it’s about time for it to bid farewell in the current enhanced technology. Computer technology means innovation and evolution both in hardware devices and software applications.

Yeah, the floopy disks were great while they were here, but now it is definately time to say goodbye. We are stepping out of the era with floppy disks and stepping into the era with CD's, DVD's, and flash drives. Personally I think flash drives will become more popular than CD's because the CD is 700mb. So, if you wanted to put a 5mb file it would be a waste of a CD, so you should just use the flash drive.

I use it to update BIOS as all the hardware I use at the moment can't be updated in Windows XP (and know it's not crappy old stuff, one 14 months old in fact).Other than that... not much... It's just that the PC has the good old compatibility problems so it's always nice to fall back on hardware so old that anything understands what it does. (Try installing Windows XP Update version on your spangly new machine without getting stuck in Win98 with driver errors .
