Aaron Schatz!
Aaron Schatz! Who he? Seek and you shall find.
Lycos's weekly list of the web's 50 most-searched-for terms makes compelling reading, with a wryly comic tone to spice up the raw statistical ups n' downs. It suffers a US bias: Big Brother languishes at number 39, nudged out by transatlantic emphemera like 'Prom Dresses' and 'IRS', but if you can lay aside your Yankophobia you'll find this site an absorbing time-waster of the most educational kind. Lycos edges ahead of Google to grab our Gold award by a tiny margin, and that margin is called Aaron Schatz. Aaron is the site's resident voyeur-analyst, and his daily comentary of the main chart is required reading for web-search spies. He also keeps watch over the Lycos 50 Elite ('most popular subjects ever') and points you to some of Lycos's entertaining 'bonus lists', such as Top 10 most-searched-for Greek gods (Zeus) and Top 10 Catherines (Ms Zeta-Jones at number two? Recount!) The site has its uses beyond voyeurism: click on any listed search term and you're linked to its search results or a relevant Terra- Lycos network site. It has its flaws, too: the Daily Report Archives, a goldmine of past search charts, stopped being updated in November 2001.
